This app is total disappointment. It's hard to setup, not user-friendly and it requires too many steps in order to allow connections from external networks like mobile data.

I'm going back to Chrome Remote Desktop. It's much faster and better and I can connect when and from where I want to. I just need one click to connect and that's all.

Well, turns out to be this was a stand-alone app in AppStore and was recently acquired by Microsoft along with its devs:

--- Effective October 8th 2013, iTAP mobile RDP apps for iOS, Mac OS X and Android platforms are discontinued.

We will continue to support the customers who have installed this app up to this date but the app will no longer be available at the application stores and no further updates will be released.

We recommend you evaluate the new Microsoft Remote Desktop app available in app stores later this month.

Thank you for using iTAP mobile RDP.

Tried to use it but could not make it work. Went back to TeamViewer which works flawlessly.

I have WIN 8.1 Pro. I am sure it is working and I may be missing some configuration. But my point was that TeamViewer is much more easy to use

@Krishna Agarwal:
You may be running into the same problem I was hitting for a second. I don't know if you are trying to enter the login credentials as DOMAIN/USER (or for home users it's COMPUTERNAME/USER) as it instructs you to but I found it will fail login if you use this usual format. Did you try JUST using your Windows username in that field? Also make sure that your firewall is not blocking port 3389 which is the RDP port. It may be blocked by default since most people do not use Remote Desktop. At least your everyday user.

Sorry if you already know this, just trying to help. If I can help troubleshoot some more I'll be glad to help, you can message me... but if you are already using TeamViewer, I will be frank with you— this app did not impress me and you might be best sticking with TV anyways!

@Brad "AppAddict, Ph.D.":
This app or any other app with Remote Desktop function (rdp) won't work with Home versions of Windows, simply because Microsoft has severed this feature in Home versions of its OS. And don't be confused by "allow remote assistance" feature, it's a totally different tech.
So it's not a shortcoming of the application.
But there is a workaround to this problem.
Simply google the "remote desktop windows 7 home" and you'll find a free patch that will turn your home edition to server edition :))

I did try to use my windows username but it did not work. I think my ip may be wrong. I tried googling about find my IP address and Google showed an ip and that's what I used in the app but did not work.
(22.10.13 - 11:06)
@Krishna Agarwal:
To find out your computer's IP, go to command prompt by typing cmd in the search menu, then type ipconfig and you will see your current IP address corresponding to the network interface (WIFI or Ethernet).

Alternatively, just find your current connection (WIFI or Ethernet) in the lower right section of the taskbar and select details and you will see your IP address.

I have router setup so it shows the internal ip (192.168...)

Oh yeah. Thanks for reminding me. I'm used to working on enterprise servers, and even at home I use Ultimate on my desktop.

But you are right, you can download the package from MS site and install it manually.

It *could* also be in the Add/Remove Programs / Windows Features as an optional install, but I think you're right, it's likely not there out of the box for home editions. Thanks for the clarification.

Also, the version from MS website I'm quite sure is an updated version from the stock version anyway. Don't quote me in this but I think 6.0 came with the business/enterprise versions of Windows/Windows Server, and the latest version is like 7.0 or so.

I remember one of the things added in that was the ability to use dual monitors without a hack. That was years ago, though. I haven't been in the systems/network admin field in about 3 years now, so admittedly I'm not up to date these days.

@Krishna Agarwal:
Yes, as he said, use "ipconfig" at the command prompt... And also you can use "ipconfig /all".

But the 192.168.x.x is likely correct. Most routers default to 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x — (class C, subnet mask of There are two other classes specifically reserved for internal use and that is the 10.x.x.x (class A) subnet and the 176.16.x.x (class B/C) subnet. Those two are rarely used unless you intentionally use them for a network. There is no reason to use the other two unless you need more than 64k (65,536) IP addresses at home, which I doubt. ;)

If you can login to the router you can also look at DHCP assigned addresses, typical routers start at or

If in doubt; if you know your pc's name you could ping it and it will resolve and show the IP.

Like "ping John-PC" or whatever.

Wow, never have I seen such a heated argument emerge from a simple misunderstanding...
Allgemein (18.10.13 - 20:35)
It has no virtual mouse / touhpad, for example like Remoter VNC has (it has RDP option in it too, not only vnc) , without virtual touchpad this app is hard to use :( ..

I agree. I hate the stationary movement system. That is, where the "control point" doesn't move, the screen pans around. I never could get used to that in clients that do this. You can switch to cursor control mode, though... There's a button to toggle this I think (make the directional pad go away) BUT you can only control the "mouse" as you would with a trackpad if it is in full screen mode. And it's a very tough task clicking a menu when you're looking at 1080p resolution on a 4" screen! Unless your fingertips are like needles! Haha.
